Game concept
I want to design an educational video game that helps students in early elementary school learn their math tables and basic algebra through a fun and repetitive gameplay loop.
World Building
The World of Arithmagicians takes place on the continent of Apothemus where something is causing the indigenous spirits to attack the people with little to no provocation it is up to the three hero’s Nash, Newt and Robin to investigate the cause of the disturbances and quell the angry spirts by using Arithmomancy a math based magic system that powers this world
Arithromancy
Arithmomancy is the magic system of this world similar to the real world where mathematics is the language of the universe. Arithmomancy harnesses that connection and lets those who can do the math preform great feats like casting massive spells, enchant their weapons, heal wounds and even teleport to a known destination. During combat arithmeticians must correctly solve a math question in order for their spells and attacks to have enough power to subdue the spirits. The faster the Arithmagician can solve each problem the more powerful the spell can become failing to answer the question correctly for fast enough can cause the spell to fail or worse backfire and hurt the castor the fear of this failure leads many in this world afraid to use arithmomancy themselves leaving it for those trained to do so
Heros
Nash
Nash is a student at the South Pointe university where he studies arithmomancy Nash has an unusual connection with the spirits and when the spirits start attacking the people of Apothemus he can feel the spirit’s pain and desperation. At the behest of the grandmaster of the university who is aware of Nash’s connection to the spirits he takes leave from the university to investigate the cause of the spirits pain and bring back the peace that he has known his whole life
Nash uses his Arithmomancy to cast elemental spells when we first meet Nash, he has just begun his time at the university and only knows basic spells but as we follow him through his journey his spells will become something to truly behold
Robin
Robin is an Elf girl who is on her pilgrimage a coming-of-age rite of her people while near the city of south pointe the disturbance happens causing the spirits to attack indiscriminately the disturbance causes the cities to close their gates and limit foreign travel. this leaves Robin stuck with no way to get home. Scared of interacting with humans she camps out in the wilderness waiting for any opportunity that will help her get home
Robin uses her Arithmomancy to calculate the arc and trajectory of her enchanted arrows to deal critical damage while leaving traps that slow and debilitate those foolish enough to attack her as her rite continues, she will learn to take better advantage of her environment.
Newt
Newt is a new Guardsman of south pointe fresh out of the academy his first assignment is to guard the student Nash as he investigates the cause of the disturbance desperate to prove himself Newt believes he is above guarding a nobody like Nash but as he travels with him, he begins to understand what it means to honor the oath of a guardsman and what it means to truly protect the people of Apothemus
Newt uses his Arithmomancy to enchant his weapons and buff himself and his allies. he can calculate the angle of his swings to deal devastating damage to his opponents as he grows as a person and guardsman his ability to protect those around him will grow as well.
Spirits
Spirits are immortal creatures and the physical embodiments of nature they take to many forms and appear as classic monster from various RPGs normally the spirit are peaceful, but something has riled them into a frenzy, they can only be quelled by tapping into Univeral forces through the use of Arithmomancy
